Margarita With A Straw: Disability porn or learn movie?

As there are very few movies in bollywood bag on disability issues but not on sexuality and romantic issues of disable person. Margarita With A Straw has been released yesterday in Indian cinema which has covered a journey of family and academic life of disable girl with emphasis on sexuality and her romantic life. The film revolves around the life of Laila who is suffering from cerebral Palsy (kind of disability), who manage to go New York University from Delhi University for her further study. The story of the film actually based on a real story of director’s sister Malini and now living her life happily. The director of the movie Shonali Bose said that “This film is actually based on my sister Malini. She also suffered from cerebral Palsy but she lived her life through the struggles and is still happily. She used to be more romantic than me and used to date guys, while I never dated anyone till I left India.”

Yesterday after watching this movie one of my friends said on Facebook that this is first ever disability porn movie and I am not in favor of this though I also watched it. First of all a movie couldn’t cover whole aspect of individual’s life though they touch one or two but emphasize one issue, in this also director tried to show the romantic and sexual life of a disable person and this doesn’t mean that all disable person is so. Second as director herself said that my sister was more romantic than me so she can’t forget this reality. Though this is slightly material movie but not porn but emphasize the romantic life a disable person. Let me say one thing which prevail in our society is the unaware or ignorance of romantic life of a disable person. Even they can’t imagine that disable person should have their romantic life and can be bisexual as in this movie Khanam was bisexual who was blind also. I think time has come to accept disable person with all his capabilities and characteristics they hold and taboos should be challenged. Somehow this movie tries to show this lesson.

Director has tried to put her best effort to make it good movie but it is average movie though Kalki was brilliantly acted as cerebral Palsy affected individual. It is worth to go for movie if you want to explore different issues other than bollywood type movie and if you love to see good acting then go for Kalki’s acting.
